Lovers Rock Dub: An Experiment in Visual Reverberation (2021)

Steve McQueen’s Lovers Rock depicts a single evening at a West London house party, against a background of race, romance and Reggae. Becoming popular in the mid-1970s, the genre of Lovers Rock, from which the film takes its name, was noted for marrying soft R&B-influenced vocal harmonies with heavy Reggae baselines. It became the soundtrack for the West Indian diaspora communities who carved out their own social and cultural practices on the margins of British society (Lowndes, 2020).
